What Happens In Your First Counselling Session?
Starting counselling can feel like a big step.
For many people, the first session is often the part that creates the most uncertainty. You may be wondering what will happen, what you’ll be expected to talk about or whether counselling is right for you at all.
The good news is that your first counselling session is usually much more relaxed than most people imagine.
There are no tests.
No pressure.
No expectations.
And there is certainly no right or wrong thing to say.
Why The First Session Matters
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another.
It’s a chance for you to share what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions you may have and begin exploring whether counselling feels like the right support or you.
Just as importantly, it’s an opportunity for you to decide whether you feel comfortable working with me.
The relationship between counsellor and client is incredibly important, and feeling safe, heard and understood is at the heart of effective counselling.
Before Your Appointment
Many people worry about preparing for counselling.
The truth is, you don’t need to prepare anything.
You don’t need a list of talking points.
You don’t need to know exactly what is wrong.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
Some clients arrive knowing exactly what they want to discuss.
Others simply know that they don’t feel like themselves and need someone to talk to.
Both are completely okay.
What Will We Talk About?
Every person is different, so every first session is different too.
However, we may talk about:
What has brought you to counselling
Any challenges you are currently facing
Your hopes for counselling
Any concerns you may have about the process
Previous experiences of counselling, if relevant
There is no pressure to talk about anything you are not ready to discuss.
We will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
What If I Get Emotional?
Many people worry about becoming upset during counselling.
Please know that this is completely normal.
Counselling provides a space where people often talk about things they may never have spoken about before.
Tears, emotions and vulnerability are welcomed and accepted.
There is no judgement.
You never need to apologise for how you feel.
What If I Don’t Know What To Say?
This is one of the most common questions I hear.
Many people arrive feeling nervous and unsure where to begin.
Often, simply talking about what has been on your mind recently is enough.
Part of my role is to help create a conversation that feels natural and supportive.
You do not need to have everything worked out before you arrive.
How Long Does A Session Last?
Counselling sessions typically last around 50 minutes.
This provides enough time to explore whatever feels important without feeling rushed.
“Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
What Happens After The Session?
At the end of the session, we will have an opportunity to reflect on how it felt and discuss possible next steps.
Some people choose to continue with regular counselling sessions.
Others may wish to take time to reflect before deciding.
There is no pressure.
The decision is always yours.
